Wii Exercise - Does it Really Do Any Good?

I see a lot of discussion about the real value of an exercise program using the wii Fit. There are a lot of hard core gym junkies weighing in with comments like "why not just go to the gym?" or "you'd get much better exercise value just doing the real thing"

While those comments are true, I believe they are missing an important aspect of wii exercise using a wii Fit system. Simply put, it's fun and convenient. I'm somewhat of a gym rat myself. But anyone who exercises regularly knows how hard it is to make it there on a regular basis. Even the most hard core exercise freeks miss occasionally. Life just has a way of rearranging your schedule for you. Those folks who are so dedicated to exercise that they seldom miss a workout will no doubt be very disappointed with any cardio based workout on a wii Fit.

So how about the other 95% of the population? A friend of mine recently told me how his son's 69 year old grandmother played golf, tennis, and bowled on a Wii Fit over the Thanksgiving Holiday. Now, I don't know the woman, but if she's like most grandmothers I am willing to bet that it was the most activity she had experienced in quite some time. And she had fun too!

What about all of us in between grandma and aerobics Annie? How useful is Wii exercise for us? I recently viewed a video where a fitness trainer did some Wii exercise and monitored her heart rate. She was able to get her pulse up to the 115 - 120 area in about 10 minutes or so. While this isn't in the target zone for many age groups, with a little more effort and time on the system we could probably do better. And the sad truth is that getting our heart rate up to 120 is a worth while goal for many of the couch potatoes out there. Don't forget - you get to do this in your living room, in your pajamas if you'd like. For many people, getting to the gym just takes too much time. For some, the expense of a gym membership is prohibitive. And yes, you could just go for a walk or run. Unless it's raining, or snowing, or the baby is asleep...

While we're on the subject of fitness, lets not forget the primary user of any Wii Fit system, the kids! Remember them? They sit in their chairs, lay on their beds for hours. The only activity is thumbs and fingers, working the controllers of their favorite video game system. Do you think they might get some benefit from actually standing up and going through the motions of snowboarding or playing a set of tennis? You betchya!

So let's not be too concerned about the question of getting a great workout on a Wii Fit system. I subscribe to the concept of any "exercise is better than no exercise". Take the stairs instead of the elevator next time your in the big building somewhere. Park way out from the store and walk, don't always be looking for the closest parking spot. Next time it's raining or snowing, pull out the Wii and get the blood moving from the comfort of your cozy living room. And be thankful the kids actually gets up off of the couch or chair to play their next video game.
